After opening in 1943 with flights by Eastern Airlines, RDU would go on to become a major hub for airlines along the Atlantic throughout the 20th century. Although it isn’t the major airline hub it once was, RDU still sees a large amount of traffic, handling more than 10 million passengers in 2015.

(RDU) Raleigh–Durham Int’l features two terminals, both of which received a major expansion from 2006-2011; RDU owns nearly 2,000 acres of land around the airport for further development. (TTA) Raleigh Executive specializes in corporate and leisure flights into the Research Triangle, and it hosts a variety of community events every year. The largest event, “Family Day @ the jetport”, is an aviation festival held annually on the first Saturday of October, featuring free plane rides for kids by the EAA Young Eagles, military and historic aircraft, flyovers, and other festival activities.

AeroServices runs a full-service avionics center at the jetport, and Sanford Aircraft provides part 135 aircraft maintenance and repair services. TTA is also home to the only Platinum Cirrus Training Center in the southeast, Elite Aircraft Services and Elite Aircraft Maintenance. The Wings of Carolina Flying Club, one of the nation’s oldest flying clubs, has been based at TTA since 1961.
