Aircraft Details

The Challenger 800 series was a short-lived aircraft that made a lasting impression. It was actually first manufactured way back in 1996 as the Challenger SE (Special Edition), but it wasn’t until 2006 that it was re-branded as the Challenger 800. Production ended in 2012 following the completion of 71 deliveries.

It was also hard to classify, mainly because it didn’t fit in any of the existing boxes used to classify aircraft by their size, range, and abilities. Bombardier could have considered this as a job well done, seeing how the 800/850 was designed to literally challenge the way business jets are categorized.

Designed as a corporate shuttle variant of Bombardier’s 50 passenger CRJ200, the Challenger 800 offers transcontinental range and a 48-foot long cabin for up to 12 passengers in an executive layout. Its main strength is the ability to transport large passenger and cargo loads over medium distances, and while it doesn’t offer the same range as similar jets, it’s lower operating costs are ideal for continental and high payload missions.

The 800 series is perhaps most famously for Beyoncé Knowles purchasing one for her husband, Jay-Z. There are 69 Challenger 850’s currently operating around the world, and all of them are wholly owned (no shared or fractional ownership). The largest number of CL-850 are based in Europe and Asia (Germany, France, China), followed by North America (New York, Toronto), and a couple located in Africa and South America.

Cabin

The upgraded CL-850 was based on the CRJ200LR commercial airliner, and shares many of its specifications and features with the 800. Upgrades were made to the interior, in-flight entertainment, and networking systems for superior comfort and productivity. It also features the widest cabin in its category, attractive operating costs, and excellent reliability.

In typical executive configuration, as many as 19 passengers can be accommodated with a variety of seating options including club seats, divans, armchairs, office space and equipment, and conference rooms. There’s also a ton of storage capacity for luggage and other items, and front & rear lavatories for long-distance flights.

Performance

The Challenger 800/850 can keep up with your company’s busy schedule, able to cruise a maximum range of just over 2,800 nautical miles at speeds up to 528 mph thanks to twin General Electric CF34-3B1 turbofans.

The engines are also designed for reduced noise for a more comfortable flight experience, and lower emissions to reduce pollution and operating costs. The cockpit features the reliable and ergonomic Collins Pro Line 4 avionics suite.
