Culture in Kuala Lumpur

Literally translating to “muddy river confluence” in Malay, the capital city of Kuala Lumpur has transformed from a tiny tin-mining village to a global metropolis of over 6 million people within just 150 years.

Bahasa Malaysia, the national language, is almost universally spoken and understood as one would expect in Malaysia’s capital, although English is still widely known in major Malaysian cities.

Kuala Lumpur hosts major festivals from a range of religions and cultures, including Ramadan, the Chinese New year, Deepavali and Christmas, while smaller cultural events such as Awal Muarram, Chap Goh Mei and Thaipusam are popular as well.

Although many festivals have fixed dates, some rely on the lunar calendar. Other celebrations that take place annually in Kuala Lumpur include the Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival, Le Tour De Langkawi and the Malaysian Grand Prix.

What to do

Kuala Lumpur is known for its dining and shopping, which you can dive head first into right here. Urban sports such as cycling, golf, running and horseback riding are popular; theaters and performance halls offer the chance to catch a show, and a range of museums cover thousands of years of Malay and Islamic history.

Of course, five-star hotels provide opportunities for relaxation and pampering at their spas and salons, and massage and reflexology places are to be found everywhere. If you’re into architecture, then you won’t be disappointed – between its modern skyscrapers and colonial-era buildings, the city is home to a wealth of architectural delights.

The sprawling residential suburbs of Kuala Lumpur seem to go on forever, covering an area of 94 sq kilometers. The different divisions in the city offer something for every visitor. The Golden Triangle is the most popular area, where many of the city’s shopping malls and five star hotels are located, most notably the iconic Petronas Twin Towers.

Just southwest from there you’ll find Old Town, the city’s traditional core home to the former colonial administrative buildings, and the Chinese commercial district now referred to as Chinatown. Bangsar is a popular dining and dancing district, while Midvalley offers up one of the most popular shopping destinations, the Megamall. Head to the east of the city to find Ampang, home to most of the foreign embassies.

Looking for an outdoor adventure? The Nothern Suburbs and home to many to several natural attractions such as the Batu Caves, the National Zoo and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. Although the city is not located by the sea, there are ferry connections available to/from Sumatra (Indonesia) at Port Klang.

Getting Around

Like many of it’s Asian neighbors, driving is king in Kuala Lumpur, so if you’re here on business, then your best bet is to charter a private helicopter. Our Kuala Lumpur Jet Charter team can arrange your helicopter lift in as little as 4 to 6 hours, and we’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all of your executive and corporate air travel needs.

The capital’s extensive highway network connects to all major cities over to Peninsular Malaysia. The city resides about mid-way down the North-South Expressway, running from the Malaysia-Thailand border to Singapore. Despite an ambitious transport system, traffic becomes quite congested; buses and monorails help to alleviate some of the gridlock.

Business in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is not only the most industrialized area of Malaysia, but it is the fastest-growing region in regards to its economy. The city is the center for finance, insurance, real estate, media and the arts in Malaysia, leading it to become the nation’s only alpha world city, and the only city in Malaysia to be recognized as a global city.

Kuala Lumpur is on its way to becoming the global leader for Islamic financing. The city is home to an increasing number of financial institutions that provide financing for many Islamic ventures, and the city features a strong presence of the Gulf area’s leading financial institutions, most notably the world’s largest Islamic bank, Al-Rajhi Bank and Kuwait Finance House.

Tourism is one of the driving forces in the local economy, and many world-wide luxury hotels have a presence in the Golden Triangle. If you’re staying in the area, you’ll find most of the city’s trendy nightlife and entertainment venues.
