An interesting yet often overlooked Italian city, Turin lies on the bank of the Po river at the foothill of the western Alps. The city represents one of the three “capitals” of Italy – Rome is the classical heart and modern capital, Milan the commercial center, and Turin the first diplomatic and industrial capital.

Turin (Torino) is the capital of Italy’s Piedmont region, and a great city for luxury travelers to discover Italian history and explore new flavors. Known as the home of the Shroud of Turin and Fiat auto plants, the city has a lot to offer, from its Baroque cafes and architecture to lavish shopping promenades and museums.

The city’s 11th-century roots in the historic Savoy dynasty were Italy’s link to royalty throughout Europe while becoming the core of the modern republic – in 1861, Turin served as the first diplomatic capital of the United Kingdom of Italy until moving to Florence in 1865. The blend of cultures resulted in many styles, but at the heart of the city lies its architectural symbol, the Mole Antonelliana, a 550-foot tall neoclassical tower.

The National Museum of Cinema, an Italian motion picture museum is located within the Mole Antonelliana. The Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile, founded by Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia, is an automobile museum featuring a collection of nearly 200 cars from eighty automobile brands originating in eight different countries.

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man believed by some Christian historians to be the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth. The shroud is located in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, although on display in the spring of 2015, the next formally scheduled exposition was set by Pope John Paul II for 2025.

Thanks to its proximity to France, the region combines the refined culinary arts of the French with Italian traditions to create an adventurous cuisine. The area is a premier wine region of Italy, and private winery and tasting tours are available featuring Italy’s most famous “noble wine”, Barolo.

Truffles are also huge in Turin – the Alba White Truffle Festival is an annual celebration held in October with truffles commanding prices in the thousands, and plenty of pasta, risotto or grilled vegetables for you to enjoy the revered mushroom with.

The Piedmont region is also the international gateway to the picturesque ski resorts of the Italian Alps – Via Lattea, also known as the Milky Way, is an extensive ski area made up of five resorts: Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, Sansicario, Claviere, and Montgenevre. If you’re interested in planning a ski trip, our team can charter a private helicopter to assist you in reaching the resort of your choice.
