Visit Genoa, Italy

Genoa is set in a dramatic location along the Mediterranean, making it an ideal destination to charter a private luxury flight for a weekend getaway, or a great starting point for spending your holiday on the Italian Riviera – the world-famous seaside villages of Cinque Terre are located just 100 km to the southeast via E80.

The Old Port, Porto Antico, has been transformed into a tourist center where visitors can stroll along the harbor and visit museums, restaurants and attractions along the way. Popular attractions around Porto Antico include Genoa’s famous Aquarium, a pirate ship called “Galeone Neptune” and an aerial ride, Grande Bigo.

Genoa is the home of pesto, and you’ll find this characteristic pasta sauce in every local restaurant, usually served with trofie pasta. Many Genoese restaurants also offer a local delicacy called farinata, a crisp chickpea pancake, along with the myriad of fried fish available from the Mediterranean.

The city’s cathedral, the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, is a patchwork of styles from Gothic to Renaissance, and set in a small, sloping square. The striped exterior is decorated with colored marbles, with a fourteenth-century Byzantine-style fresco inside the main portal.

Via Garibaldi, a street at the city’s historical center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site lined with massive palaces, each more lavish than the last. Many of these palaces contain fabulous works of art and are museums of their own, including Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco.

There are many other museums throughout Genoa, including modern art galleries and a great museum of nautical history, Galata Museo del Mare. There are also attractive gardens to visit and trails leading to views over the city along with the hilltop forts built to protect it.
