December 9th, 2020 – The World Economic Forum has announced plans to reschedule and relocate its annual meeting for the year 2021, moving from it’s usual host of in the Swiss town of Davos to Singapore in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
WEF attendees typically convene in late January to engage with other political, business, cultural leaders around the world to discuss and shape global, regional, and industry agendas. Next year’s annual WEF meeting will take place in May, rather than its usual time slot to safeguard the health of its participants and host community.
The decision to relocate the meeting to is a direct result of recent numbers in Europe compared to Southern Asia. Recently, Switzerland reported more than 4,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day, while on the same day, Singapore reported only 3. In total, there have only been 58,285 cases and 29 deaths in Singapore since the start of the pandemic.
The extraordinary measures taken by Singapore to combat the spread of the virus has allowed green lanes to operate between other locations in Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong, and the city-state is now tentatively easing shutdown restrictions while rebooting its tourism and events industry.
