Commercial Airline Services Suspended

Airlines are dropping service to more than 75 airports across the United States

As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to impact daily life around the world, commercial airlines are searching for relief from the drastically reduced demand for travel.

Initially, companies were required to maintain service to all destinations. Recent changes have been made to allow airlines to drop certain destinations from their routes. Reports indicate that 15 major airlines are discontinuing service to 75 cities across the United States, with the potential for more reductions throughout the remainder of the year.

The CARES Act that was released in response to the pandemic required airlines to maintain certain minimum services across the board. The Department of Defense is now allowing for case-by-case exemptions to be made, dropping the larger sum between either 5 destinations or 5% of their total markets served.

International travel has also been dramatically reduced, with restrictions in place for travel from the U.S. to Canada and Mexico until at least June 21st, 2020.
