The MD-11 maintained the triple-jet design of the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, while stretching the fuselage to accommodate more passenger (up to 298) and adding more powerful GE engines to offer a range of up to 7,130 nautical miles. It first entered service in 1990, with more than 200 built until Boeing took over the program in 1997, and ended production in 2000.

The MD-11F is an all-cargo variant that shares its forward port-side cargo door with the MD-11CF. The main deck offer 15,530 cubic feet of cargo volume, with a maximum payload of 200,151 pounds / 26 pallets (88 by 125 ” or 96 by 125 “) and fully loaded range of just over 3,500 nautical miles. A total of 53 cargo models were built, and with more fuel-efficient airliners entering the market at the turn of the century, many MD-11s in passenger service were converted into cargo airliners. These models included the MD-11CF Convertible Freighter, and the MD-11BCF Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF), a program which converts passenger airliners into freighters.
