The event takes place from October 1st – October 9th, 2016, where each morning for nine days, more than 500 balloons lift off from the park, floating gently through the crisp, autumn air above New Mexico as the sun rises over the Sandia Mountains. What started in 1972 as a celebration of a radio station’s 50th anniversary has literally ballooned into the world’s largest event of its kind, attracting nearly one-million visitors every year.

The spectacle paints the skies with surreal colors in whimsical shapes and designs, creating a visually sticking scene that makes the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival one of the world’s most photographed events. Local artists also get the opportunity to make the fiesta’s balloons the subject matter of their paintings. Event Schedule
Dawn Patrol
Since the 1978 edition of the festival, Dawn Patrol pilots take off before sunrise and fly until it is light enough to see landing sites. Balloonists with their feet on the ground appreciate the Dawn Patrol’s work as it gives an early idea of what the wind speeds and directions will be like at various altitudes.

Mass Ascensions
One of the highlights of the fiesta, all of the balloons participating in the Mass Ascension will launch in two waves to fill the sky with hundreds of balloons at once. Launch directors are tasked with coordinating the launch in order for each of the balloons to rise in a safe manner; the directors are affectionately referred to as “zebras” while serving as traffic referees in their black-and-white-stripes.

Special Shape Rodeo
A crowd favorite since first appearing in 1989, the Special Shape Rodeo features a line-up of uniquely shaped balloons launched simultaneously, with shapes ranging from a sneaker, a dragon and giant flying cacti to a Mariachi guitarist, a fire truck and flying Angry Birds. The Special Shape Rodeo is one of the more popular events during the festival, and a family favorite.

Balloon Glows
The event features a series of balloons illuminated across the night sky like giant holiday ornaments, creating a breathtaking sight for festival goers on the ground. Grab yourself a seat and relax, as the “Glowdeo” is followed by New Mexico’s most spectacular fireworks display.
