Early industries included salt and the nation’s first natural gas well, with coal becoming the centerpiece of the city’s economic prosperity. Ft. Lee, built in 1788, was the area’s first permanent settlement; by 1791, Daniel Boone was a member of the Kanawha County Assembly.

Today, trade, utilities, government, medicine, and education play central roles in the city’s economy. The University of Charleston is the city’s main college, and West Virginia University, Marshall University, and West Virginia State University all have campuses in the area.

Attractions & Culture in Charleston, WV

Charleston is surrounded by rolling hills and lush forests, most notably the Kanawha State Forest. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities outdoors during the spring and summer, including scenic walks, hiking, biking, and riding trails.

Charleston is home to a true, four-season humid subtropical climate with elements of a continental climate. okay, sow hat exactly does this translate to? Well to start, Fall is the most comfortable time to visit, with crisp autumn evenings that quickly warm into mild afternoons.

Spring is totally unpredictable; seasonally-appropriate weather typically arrives in late March or early April. From there, Spring time highs can fluctuate like hourly charter rates, with day-today temperatures varying by upwards of 20 °F. The month of May brings more consistency, with warmer, summer-like days that are ideal for hiking, rafting, or just enjoying the fresh mountain air while the city is in full bloom.

Once summer finally hits, daytime highs can reach up to 95 °F, often paired with high humidity; nearly a month’s worth of days rise above 90 °F during the summer. Thunderstorms occur frequently from late spring throughout the summer, and they can get quite severe from time to time. Otherwise, the area averages around 3.5″ inches of rain every month.

Winters can get cold, with daily averages in January dropping to 34 °F, with occasional warm stretches hitting 50 ° on delightful occasion. Subzero temps are rare, and snowfall ranges between late November and early April, with the heaviest snowfall coming between January and February. That said, winters in Charleston are warmer than the rest of West Virginia thanks to its location west of higher elevations which shields the city from cold, easterly winds.
