Shaped by its geography, Spokane and its history are defined by its eponymous river, which flows directly through the city, cascading over a series of waterfalls in the heart of downtown. In 1974, the river and much of downtown was reclaimed during Expo 74, the world’s first environmentally-themed World’s Fair.

Today, the city is the economic hub of an area that serves roughly 1.5 million people. Although it’s home to just over 200,000 residents, that’s still enough to make it the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis. The metro area, which includes Kootenai County in neighboring Idaho, is home to nearly 700,000 people.

Activities

No matter which direction you go, the area surrounding Spokane offers a variety of terrain due to its valley location, with semi-arid scablands and the Columbia Plateau to the west, fertile farmlands rolling along the Palouse to the south, and both the Selkirk & Rocky Mountains to the north and east.

There are a variety of attractions to check out in the city, including Riverfront Park, the site of the 1974 World’s Fair and featuring a sculpture walk. While in the park, visitors can take a cable car ride which offers views from over the Spokane Falls.

Other attractions include Manito Park, the Monroe Street Bridge, Riverside State Park, the John A. Finch Arboretum, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, the Davenport Arts District, the Bing Crosby Collection, and Spokane Falls.

Spokane is also home to an active music scene, with many popular touring acts stopping at large venues like the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena and the Knitting Factory.

Golf is also in full swing in Spokane, with an array of courses consistently ranking among the best public courses in the nation. There are a total of 33 golf courses within a short drive, and the city itself operates four public golf courses, including the award-winning Indian Canyon Golf Course. Spokane County operates an additional six public courses.

Head 20 miles east to cross into Idaho, and enjoy a variety of watersports and outdoors activities around Lake Coeur d’Alene. You can enjoy some unique golf: Coeur d’Alene resort golf course features a green floating in the lake.

Luxury Hotels & Inns

Spokane’s 4-star hotels include a series of Davenports: the Davenport Hotel, the Davenport Grand, and the Davenport Tower. You can also splurge at Hotel Lusso, and the Montvale Hotel. Highly rated Bed & Breakfast Inns include the Marianna Stoltz House Bed and Breakfast, the 1899 House Bed & Breakfast, and the Roberts Mansion Inn & Event Center, a grand B&B in a historic 1889 Victorian mansion.

For business travelers here on a quick turn around, Holiday Inn, Hilton, Ramada and Wingate all offer hotels located within walking distance of the airport; if you’re planning on playing games while in Spokane, then grab a room at the Northern Quest Resort & Casino.

Cross the border into western Idaho, and visit the Coeur d’Alene, known for water sports on Lake Coeur d’Alene and hiking trails in the Canfield Mountain Natural Area and Coeur d’Alene National Forest. The area is also home to a variety of 4 and 5 star resorts and inns, including the Coeur d’Alene Resort, Blackwell Hotel, Ida-Home Bed & Breakfast, American Country Bed and Breakfast. The Stoneridge Resort is located to the north in Blanchard, ID.

Additional Airports in Eastern Washington and Idaho

If you’re planning on traveling outside of Spokane, there are four additional airports for air charter flights: two in Washington, and two in Idaho. However, if you’re renting a private jet, the only airport available from the list below is Coeur d’Alene Airport, also known as Pappy Boyington Field, a popular hub for luxury travelers visiting 4 & 5 star resorts and B&B’s in western Idaho.
